Advanced Analysis of Linked Health Data 2013
Dates: 1-5 July 2013
Location: Swansea University, Wales
The course caters to users of SPSS, SAS or Stata with course
materials and exercises covering all three statistical software
packages. Advanced principles of health and social epidemiology are
combined with hands-on practical exercises in the implementation of
computing solutions for managing and analysing a range of complex
linked data sets.
The course instructor, Professor David Preen, will provide
students with a theoretical grounding in the classroom on each
topic, followed by a training session on the corresponding
technological computing solutions. Students use multiple fictitious
but realistically modelled linked data files in the hands-on
exercises. The course will also include a series of guest
presentations by Professor D'Arcy Holman throughout the five days.
Professors Preen and Holman, along with additional lab
demonstrators, will be available in the computing laboratory
session each afternoon and conduct one-on-one coaching for those
who need assistance.
Registration for the course is essential and closes on 14 June
2013. For more information please click here.
Australasian Ethics Network Conference 2013
Workshop: Ethics and Data Linkage
Date: 27 November 2013
Location: Fremantle, WA
Facilitators: A/Prof Judy Allen (Privacy consultant, PHRN) and Dr Felicity Flack (Manager, Policy and Client Services, PHRN)
Cost: Free
Data linkage, in simple terms, is a method of bringing together information about people, places and events in a ways that protect individual privacy. It enables large, population wide, studies to be conducted. Data linkage infrastructure is currently being expanded across Australia and this will increase the attractiveness of linked data to many researchers as the availability and accessibility of data collections improves. We anticipate that there will be an increase in applications to HRECs for research using linked data.
This one-day workshop will provide participants with a range of skills and knowledge that improve their ability and confidence to assess research applications proposing the use of linked data. Topics covered in this workshop will include:
- What is data linkage?
- Overview of data linkage in Australia
- Risks and benefits of data linkage
- Minimising and managing risk
- Considering a waiver of consent
- Legal framework and legislative requirements
- Considerations involved in ethics review of data linkage
To register for this event please submit an expression of interest on the Australasian Ethics Network Conference 2013 website.
Human Research Ethics for Data Linkage
Workshop: Ethics and Data Linkage
This training workshop examines the particular ethical issues raised by data linkage and research.
This one-day workshop will provide participants with a range of skills and knowledge that improve their ability and confidence to assess research applications proposing the use of linked data. The training covers the following topics:
- What is data linkage?
- Overview of data linkage in Australia
- Risks and benefits of data linkage
- Best practice protocol
- Minimising and managing risk
- Considering a waiver of consent
- Legal framework and legislative requirements
If you would like to register your interest in future HREC training, please contact Mrs Liz Owens at lizo@ichr.uwa.edu.au or on (08) 6389 7305.

Research Network.
Secure Unified Research Environment (SURE) Training
Users of SURE are required to complete specific training prior to receiving access to the SURE facility. The training is currently offered as a face-to-face one day workshop. The implementation of a training program as a condition of accessing SURE ensures:
- Researchers have an awareness of legal and ethical issues and considerations relating to information security and data management relevant to undertaking linked data research
- Researchers are given detailed guidance on the features of SURE including accessing and using the system
The modules presented in the training program are:
- Data linkage research in Australia: An overview of the data linkage process and the development of linked data research in Australia
- Responsibilities of a researcher: An overview of the legal and ethical considerations of researchers when conducting linked data research
- Information security: The current approach to information security in linked data research and a description of the security model of SURE
- Statistical disclosure analysis: An introduction to principles and methods of statistical disclosure analysis and statistical disclosure control
If you would like to be added to the Expressions of Interest list, so that you will be notified of future training sessions, please email the SURE team.
