The AIHW launched the National Health Data Hub (NHDH) mid-May 2024. The PHRN National Master Linkage Key initiative has been a pivotal factor in delivering the NHDH linked data.
The NHDH, formerly known as the National Integrated Health Services Information (NHISI) analytical asset, marks a significant advance in Australia's healthcare data infrastructure, facilitating streamlined access to critical health information for research purposes.
The NHDH is a national linked data resource, encompassing a comprehensive array of health data including data about admitted patient care, emergency department visits, immunisation, aged care, Medicare Benefits Schedule, Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, and mortality data.
The development and implementation of the NHDH owe much to the support of the Population Health Research Network (PHRN). Commencing in 2018, the PHRN spearheaded a funded project aimed at transitioning from ad hoc cross-jurisdictional linkage to a sustainable linked data system. Collaborating closely with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) and state/territory data linkage units, this initiative has culminated in the establishment of a routine and enduring approach to cross-jurisdictional data linkage.
One of the key benefits of the NHDH is its capacity to streamline data sharing between Australian jurisdictions while minimising the need to disclose personal information. This achievement not only streamlines access to national linked data for research but also ensures robust privacy protection for individuals.
As the NHDH becomes operational, it is poised to play a pivotal role in facilitating evidence-based healthcare policy decisions and fostering innovative research initiatives aimed at improving public health outcomes across Australia. Read more
