Metadata Platform

The Metadata Platform is a centralised discovery tool that helps researchers identify, explore and evaluate datasets available for linked data research across Australia. Researchers can search, browse and compare datasets, access supporting documentation, and learn how data has been used in past research all through one platform.

Why was the Metadata Platform developed?

How it Works

Discover datasets using search, browse and filter functions

Determine utility by reviewing key documents such as variable lists

Assess fit for purpose by checking available data ranges and limitations

Review previous publications to explore prior usage

Learn how to apply for data access and key contacts

Key Features

Search, Browse and Filter

Search datasets by keywords or browse by topic, jurisdiction, collection type and other characteristics.

Standardised Metadata

Metadata is presented in a consistent format, making it easier to compare datasets across jurisdictions and data custodians.

Documentation

Access data dictionaries, variable lists, data quality reports and synthetic data samples where available.

Publications

Explore journal articles, reports and presentations that have used a dataset, to better understand the strengths.

FAQs and Guidance

Access answers to common questions and practical information about accessing linked data.

Mock data (coming in August)

Access to 20 rows of low-fidelity (non-representative data) mock data for rapid exploration of datasets and variable selection. Available for selected WA and Vic datasets only.

Available Dataset Types

Administrative Datasets

Data routinely collected by government and service providers during the delivery and administration of services.

Clinical Registries

Data systematically collected from people with a specific condition, treatment, procedure, or healthcare service.

Project-specific Data

Data collected for a defined purpose, such as a research study or survey, typically with participant consent.

Important Notes

The Metadata Platform contains metadata only and does not provide access to record-level data, reports or statistical outputs.

The platform includes datasets routinely linked through Australia’s data linkage infrastructure. Additional datasets may be available through individual jurisdictions and data custodians.
