CROSS-Link
CROSS-Link is a component of Trial Link, a PHRN program delivering infrastructure and resources to support research aiming to develop new therapeutics.
The challenge:
The CROSS-Link (Clinical Registries: Optimised and Streamlined Solution for Data Linkage) project is funded by PHRN. It aims to streamline data linkage between clinical registries and administrative data collections, making it cheaper and faster without impacting privacy.

The approach:
Clinical registries support Australia’s healthcare system through activities such as giving feedback on healthcare quality and providing data for medical research – all while protecting the privacy of patients and community members.
The process of linking data held by clinical registries with matching administrative data (information that is routinely collected by government departments) is currently labour-intensive and expensive. Components enabling linkage must be built from scratch each time a request is fulfilled, no matter how many times equivalent linkage has been completed before.
CROSS-Link’s three research programs focus on governance, consumer engagement and the technical aspects of linking registries with administrative data.
CROSS-Link’s collaborative design process will involve a wide range of experts and will centre the views and needs of consumers, who will be involved throughout the project.
